About Your Guide - Craig McDonald

I was born and raised in the Central Belt of Scotland. With the Campsie Fells on my doorstep, and a large country park nearby, I was ideally suited to catch 'the bug'! Combine this with countless family holidays across the UK and my fascination with the history, the texture of our landscape and the generations of people who have worked and shaped it and I had a passion in the making!

Some of my earliest memories involved my Dad taking me out to teach me camp craft and basic hill skills. He had done it all before, so I guess I was just a chip off the old block!

Fast forward several years and I am in High School, completing my UCAS form. I was applying to university to do Graphic Design, but something didn't feel right. During that Easter break, a friend and I completed the West Highland Way. It was like an epiphany - suddenly I knew exactly what I wanted to do. Eight months later I was studying Adventure Recreation Management at Glasgow Caledonian University. I completed this with a 2:1 Honours Degree, and immediately started work at Castle Toward Outdoor Education Centre. I quickly progressed through my Mountain Leader Award, Single Pitch Award and Winter Mountain Leader training.

I left the Castle to further my mountaineering qualifications here in Fort William - the Outdoor Capital of the UK, and since being here I have gained my Winter Mountain Leader Award and I am a Freelance Instructor for several Outdoor Organisations, including Kilbowie Outdoor Education Centre, Stramash Outdoor Enterprise, West Highland College and Wilderness Scotland.

I love being outdoors, I love the thrill of a harsh winter day, the beauty of a crystal clear summer sky, the diverse challenges our mountain landscapes provide and the cameraderie shared with other like minded folk. More than this, I love teaching others new skills, encouraging them to take the next step and sharing their success. I am a sociable creature who enjoys the company of others, no matter what their background, and look forward to a long and passionate career in the UK mountains. Why not join me..?
