Ben Nevis - The Hard Way

Route: Ben Nevis via Carn Mor Dearg Arete

Distance: 15km (17km from Torlundy)

Height: 1344 metres

Difficulty: 5/5

Time: 9-12 hours

Meeting: Achintee, Fort William

For those with a good level of fitness, an adventurous spirit and a desire to avoid the madding crowds, this is the route for you!

Starting from the Upper North Face Car Park (add 30 minutes each way if starting from Torlundy) the route takes advantage of the recently renewed Allt a' Mhuilinn footpath. From here you are immediately met with stunning views of the majestic North Face with its towering cliffs, pinnacles and gullies.

We will follow this track for approximately 2 km before veering ESE and climbing steeply over rough broken ground to make the ridge proper. If you are lucky you may see or hear some ptarmigan or other interesting wildlife in this area! The climb is several hundred metres but once it is over you are rewarded with spectacular views in every direction.

The ridge line itself from the first summit of the day, Carn Mor Dearg, is reasonably easy to follow, but negotiates large boulders, and you will no doubt end up using your hands as much as your feet in some places! Be sure to have your camera to hand as every step you take seems to herald in yet more incredible views of distant peaks, waterfalls and meadows.

As the ridge continues, it narrows considerably, and although it is not technically difficult, a good head for heights is a must! The drop on either side becomes sheer and you will become very aware of the height, but the feeling of adventure and exhiliration makes the exposure well worth while!

Once the ridge opens out again you have reached the head of Coire Leis, and can begin the final climb of the day over rocky ground to make the summit plateaux and the welcome sight of the top! Most likely, you will be met here by large crowds of people who have ventured up the tourist track, and you will feel relief at having had your ascent almost entirely to yourself, immersed in the tranquility and grandeur of Ben Nevis!

After a much needed break at the top, we will take up the Pony Track for our descent, zig-zagging down towards the Red Burn and Half-way Lochan, from where we veer off again NE and then SE until we can cross safely back to the Allt a' Mhuilinn path and back to the waiting cars.
