Winter Skills Courses

Winter Skills

 

This course is designed for people who already have a good level of summer hillwalking experience in order to give you the basic skills required to travel confidently in the winter mountains. Topics covered include:

 

  • Choosing Suitable Winter Equipment

  • Using the Boot as a Tool

  • Ice Axe and Crampon Skills

  • Self Arresting with and without an Ice Axe

  • Basic Avalanche Awareness

  • Winter route choice

  • Winter Navigation

 

This course can be run as a 1 day intensive course, or more appropriately as a two day course which will incorporate a journey in order to consolidate your new skills and put them into practice. Possible venues include Ben Nevis, Aonach Mor, Creag Meagaidh or Glen Coe.

 

The course does not include equipment hire (axe, crampons, boots and helmet). Please see the list of kit hire providers here.

 

 

 

The Winter Mountain Landscape

 

This course is designed to help you understand the mountain landscape which we walk through and admire. It is an educational journey with the focus being on learning rather than making a summit, although this will be a secondary objective. Topics covered may include:

 

  • Winter Flora & Fauna

  • Snow & Ice Features

  • Glaciation – a Modern Process

  • The Weather

 

This course can be run as a 1 or 2 day course and can take place in a range of areas, although Ben Nevis, Glen Coe and the Cairngorm Plateaux are of particular interest.
